As the national program’s mission states,“The SHPEtinas program accelerates and affirms Latina representation at all levels of STEM corporate and academic leadership. Encouraging Latinas to pursue higher education and careers in STEM recognizes the unique perspective they bring to solving the world's most pressing problems while creating new, influential role models for future leaders.” A t Texas A&M we follow this mission through workshops, panel discussions, events and many other activities which help increase women representation in STEM fields. We strive for the SHPEtina program to help our Latina engineering students build a great career while providing support to continue breaking barriers and excelling.
At Texas A&M, our SHPE chapter has a SHPEtinas committee which aims to fulfill the national program’s mission. This committee is in charge of planning, organizing, and helping the TAMU SHPE chapter host various events for the Latinas (and Latinos) in our community. As well as designing cool merchandise to promote our program at TAMU!
SHPE National has hosted various events every year at their National conventions. These events contribute to the support and development of women leaders in STEM. From personal development, empowerment, career advice, to tech talks, this conference has had many attendants, many from our own Texas A&M chapter. This conference has inspired many women who are active members of SHPE and have confirmed to have learned valuable skills and lessons which helped them in their professional career. We highly encourage our Latinas at TAMU to attend this great conference in the fall!
The region 5 chapter is hosting a series of SHPEtina Conferences where they cover various topics such as empowerment, career, and skill development. Their next series will be hosted via a virtual platform on February 20, 2021 and students can sign up at https://form.jotform.com/203228131069145.
